    Additional Information about the school

    West yesterday, today, and tomorrow...

West Middle School has a long and storied history, dating back to 1924. It has been an integral part of the Westside Community and Old Colorado City for almost 100 years. The West Middle School offers comprehensive middle school programs with opportunities designed to meet the individual needs of middle-level students.

We believe in the power of high expectations and take a "no excuses" approach to student achievement. Our school community is relentless in ensuring that all children have access to effective instructional strategies and challenging academic content. The staff continually strives to prepare children for the challenges of tomorrow. We believe that lifelong learners have excellent beginnings at West Middle School.

Additionally, we offer programs for gifted learners, those for whom English is a second language. We have a broad range of activities, including art, music (choir, band, and orchestra), and physical education for all). Numerous before and after-school clubs and activities provide opportunities for students to participate academically, athletically, and socially.

We achieve excellence by focusing on Ambitious Instruction, developing our collaborative staff, and engaging with our families. West's "small school atmosphere" is said to be "the best-kept secret on the Westside."

Priority Performance Challenge and Associated Root Cause

Priority Performance Challenge:  Week Collective Efficacy

    Root Cause: Lack of Systems

The lack of systems to start the school year caused uncertainty and inconsistency with staff.

Root Cause Category: Infrastructure (data, systems, identification)

Priority Performance Challenge:  Stagnant Growth in Math

    Area of Focus: Math growth

Root Cause: Lack of Consistency with programs, coaching, and supports

Having a partnership with Instructional Empowerment consultants along with training in Text first planning, Eureka Math2, and Best First Instruction expectations placed many different expectations on staff. Learning how these programs and expectations intertwine was a barrier to the effectiveness of staff. In the upcoming year, staff will have more familiarity with these expectations and will be able to marry the goals and expectations to a higher level.
