    Additional Information about the school

Wiggins Elementary is a small rural school on the Eastern Plains of Colorado. While we have reasonable access to Denver, Greeley, Fort Collins, and other surrounding areas, Wiggins Elementary still experiences difficulties in attracting teachers. The teacher turnover rate is very low - most of the staff and teachers are from the community. Collaboration is a big part of our culture - there are 2-3 classrooms at every grade level and teachers share a common plan time. The student to teacher ratio is under 1:25.

Wiggins Elementary was a Reading First School for several years and experienced success with their reading scores. One major factor of the success was low teacher turnover. The school retained the teachers who were trained in Reading First. With the new standards, new test, and the READ Act, the school was in a good position to make the transition. Areas of improvement for literacy included alignment with an approved comprehensive core program and additional teacher training. The school maintains three first grade classrooms to increase the number of students reading on grade level beginning in first grade. To align with the new math standards, the school has updated their curriculum and sought additional training for teachers. In order to address gaps in the area of English Aquisition, the school has dedicated a highly qualified teacher in the ELL position.

Narrative on Data Analysis and Root Cause Identification

Description of School Setting and Process for Data Analysis

Wiggins Elementary has a Building Leadership Team that meets once per month to discuss and plan for activities in the elementary. The committee is focused on the UIP goals and ensuring that all activities are aligned to our UIP. To align activities and create the necessary focus, the school uses the state evaluation system and state and local assessment data is included in each teacher's evaluation. The measure of student learning indicators are discussed by the Building Leadership Team and each grade level has specific individual targets for student achievement and growth based on the specific grade level needs and targets. For example, K-2nd grade focus on DIBELS and moving students from RED and moving students to GREEN - teachers are evaluated on these measures. The 3rd grade focus is on DIBELS and CMAS, so the indicators include student data on both; while 4th and 5th utilize other assessments besides DIBELS as indicators. Student data is analyzed in grade level meetings once per month and specific issues are identified and targeted. The focus of the elementary has been ELL students and moving all ''cusp'' students to proficient. Teacher goals are aligned with the UIP goals

    Prior Year Targets

Provide a summary of your progress in implementing the Major Improvement Strategies and if they had the intended effect on systems, adult actions, and student outcomes (e.g. targets).

Based on your reflection and evaluation, provide a summary of the adjustments that you will make for this year's plan.

    Current Performance

The area the school falls short in is ELA for 3rd, 4th, and 5th on PARCC. The school is approaching for ALL STUDENTS, but not meeting for ELL STUDENTS. ELL students are not performing at the same level as other students in the area of ELA.

ALL STUDENTS are not yet meeting the expectations in the area of ELA.

    Trend Analysis

    Trend Direction: Stable

Based on prior year SPF data, Wiggins Elementary has median growth percentiles at or above the state minimum in the areas of reading, writing, and math. We received a rating of "meets" in the area of academic growth.

Priority Performance Challenge and Associated Root Cause

    Priority Performance Challenge:  ELL 3rd, 4th, 5th

Decrease the gap in achievement between English language learners and native English speakers in the areas of ELA, math and science at 3rd, 4th and 5th grades.

    Root Cause: Vocabulary and context

Align current curriculum with the new standards to meet the demands for applying the rich vocabulary and context necessary.

Why were these challenges selected and what is the magnitude of the overall performance challenges:

This challenge has been selected because this is the area the school does not meet the performance requirements.

How were the Root Causes were selected and verified:

The new state-aligned curriculum addresses additional content and skills necessary to perform on PARCC, providing students- from all backgrounds- the vocabulary and context they need to apply new skills in thinking and assimilating information in the area of ELA.
